Originally developed in 1914 with a 2-story 18x18' log house, East Mountain Lookout was the
last unmodified lookout of its unique design. This replacement lookout was built in the 1930's by
two local Finnish carpenters working in the CCC program. Originally, four of the two-story log
lookouts were staffed by the Southern Idaho Timber Protective Association. East Mountain was
staffed through the 1995 season, then decommissioned. The Central Idaho Cultural Center in
McCall had purchased the lookout from SITPA with plans to restore it. In late June 2002, a lightning-sparked
blaze destroyed the cabin which was listed on the National Historic Lookout Register.
